My Experience at the U.S. and Canada University Fairs
In September 2025, I had the opportunity to volunteer as an interpreter at the U.S. and Canada University Fairs, representing DePaul University. It was an experience that allowed me to step outside my usual school environment and help Vietnamese students and families explore opportunities for studying abroad.
Before the fairs, I researched the university I was assigned to, learning about its academic programs and other opportunities so that I could introduce it to prospective students. I also helped promote the university fairs and encourage people to attend. I quickly realized that representing a university involved more than simply knowing its name and programs. I needed to understand what made it appealing and communicate that information in a way that would interest students and their families.
During the fairs, my role was to interpret between university representatives and Vietnamese attendees. I helped bridge the language gap, allowing students and parents to ask questions, understand the information being shared, and learn more about their potential educational opportunities.
What I enjoyed most was being able to help people feel more comfortable asking questions about something as important as their future education. Choosing a university can be overwhelming, especially when considering studying in another country. Being able to support those conversations, even in a small way, made the experience meaningful to me.
The experience also helped me appreciate the importance of communication. Interpreting is not simply translating words from one language into another; it requires listening carefully, understanding the context, and conveying information clearly so that both sides can understand each other.
Looking back, this opportunity was especially valuable because it connected with my interests in communication and international education. It allowed me to see how effective communication can bring people together, build understanding, and help them make informed decisions.
I am grateful to have been part of the university fairs and to have represented DePaul University. It was a meaningful opportunity to learn, connect with people, and gain experience communicating across cultures skills I hope to continue developing as I pursue my future studies.
