Little Hands, Bright Lanterns

Little Hands, Bright Lanterns

My alarm rang at 5 a.m., and I will admit that getting out of bed was not exactly the most exciting part of my day.

I had signed up to volunteer at a Mid-Autumn Festival for preschoolers, which meant arriving at around 6:30 a.m. to help prepare lanterns for the children. As someone who is definitely not at their best early in the morning, I knew it would be a long day. But I was also excited to be part of an activity that would bring a little happiness to the kids.

When we arrived at their classroom, the children were absolutely lovely. Their excitement was contagious. The moment they saw us, their faces lit up, and they seemed so happy to have visitors helping them prepare for the festival.

Our task was to help make lanterns, but the experience quickly became about much more than the activity itself. There was something heartwarming about seeing the children explore the materials, follow along with us, and become excited about what they were creating. Their energy made the classroom feel brighter, even though most of us had barely started our day.

Of course, volunteering with preschoolers was not exactly a quiet experience! There was plenty to do, and keeping up with their excitement took energy. By the time the activity was over, I was definitely tired. Waking up so early had caught up with me, and I could feel how long the morning had been.

But whenever I thought about how tired I was, I remembered the children’s smiles.

It was a simple reminder that volunteering does not always have to involve a huge project or a dramatic impact. Sometimes, it means giving your time, helping someone make a lantern, and creating a happy memory for a child.

I went home feeling exhausted, but also grateful that I had been able to contribute to their celebration. If I had to wake up at 5 a.m. again to see those smiles, I think I would do it.

Although I might complain a little when my alarm rings!
